Prompt for Friday, September 11th, 2026:
Harvest is near – or here already! – for many corn and soybean farms in Illinois.
Arguably both the best and busiest season of the year, a lot of preparation happens behind the scenes in the weeks leading up to the first combine pass. Use this weekend to document your recipe for a successful harvest season.
Consider sharing:
- Machinery prep: Cover what you’ve already done, what you’re working on this weekend, and what still needs to happen before harvest is underway.
- How you know exactly when corn and soybeans are ready to harvest. Head out to the field with your camera and show visible indicators that plants have reached maturity and grab a few samples to demonstrate a moisture test.
- Preparation for long days in the field with livestock expecting meals according to the usual schedule. How do livestock chores change with harvest? Talk about anything you do to prepare in advance to make your life easier during the busy season.
- Speaking of meals on a schedule – it’s almost field meal season! What pre-season prep work needs to happen to keep the humans fed and watered during harvest? Consider grabbing footage of your next grocery store trip, create a carousel of your family’s favorite grab-and-go snacks and why they’re perfect for busy season (parents constantly on-the-go may relate!), or even a recipe share for your favorite harvest meals.
Examples of how to tell the story:
- Compile a 60-90 second video using b-roll clips of various machinery preparations and adding a voiceover to explain what is happening in the video.
- Create a 60-90 second video that includes clips featuring you bringing the audience along to the field to show the current state of corn and/or soybean plants, clips pulling sample ears or pods, and clips doing a moisture test (informal check in the field or formal with a trip to the scale house or elevator). Utilize the caption to help give background to your short video and what your audience can expect to see or learn.
- Assemble a carousel rating common field snacks. Use text on the photos to share your ratings and use the caption to share key features of the best field snacks.
